Currently the European Parliament Guideline on the WEEE directive (2002/96/EG) is being transposed into national law in nearly all European countries. This guideline has introduced a product responsibility for EEE (electric and electronic equipment) devices in their end of life stage.

During the transfer of national law, the manufacturers’ responsibility has changed into the responsibility of the importer, meaning that the organization that brings the goods into the EU country is also responsible for the execution of WEEE. This new law is applicable for every producer who is selling EEE (Medical) products in the European community.

The goal of WEEE is a reduction of waste in order to reduce environmental damage caused by these products and by transferring this into environmental savings by recycling of materials. The following are required for manufacturers/distributors:

  • Product labeling
  • Authority registration
  • Organization of RMA or waste take-back (WEEE)
  • Environmentally aware product design
